Racial Trauma: What Is It and How Do I Cope?

This event is open to all those who do not identify as White.

Racial trauma represents the mental and physical symptoms and consequences that people of color experience after a racist event, or cumulative experiences of racism. In the wake of recent events, increasing attention has been brought to the emotional, psychological, and physiological impact of racism on people of color.

During this presentation, Stacey Thompson, LICSW, LCSW-C, will define racial trauma and discuss ways that it impacts individuals and communities, both physically and emotionally. Stacey will also offer strategies for coping with racial trauma. After the presentation, a safe space will be provided for individuals to discuss some of the ways that they have been impacted by racial trauma. Facilitator Stacey Thompson has over nine years of experience as a Clinical Social Worker and specializes in working collaboratively with adults to address trauma, depression, anxiety, and loss and grief. She utilizes techniques from body-oriented psychotherapies, mindfulness, brain-based therapies, and Reiki. She firmly believes in the innate wisdom of the body to heal from trauma and navigate life challenges. Stacey has a private therapy practice co-located Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
