A Celebration of Life was held for Herb Lowrey on July 12, 2022. Family and friends gathered at Barcelona Wine Bar in Atlanta to share loving reflections, music, and Herb’s favorite wine and tapas. The memorial for Herb was officiated by Chaplain Rohn Armstrong, Lieutenant Colonel USAF.
Herb Wilson Lowrey, 80, passed away at his home in Atlanta, GA, on March 26, 2020. He was born in Louisville, KY on January 30, 1940. After graduating from Western Kentucky University, he managed the Boys Club of America in Phoenix, Arizona for more than thirteen years. He made a major career change and spent more than thirty years as a commercial real estate broker in Arizona before relocating to Washington DC in 2006.
Herb was a brilliant poet who navigated his life situations using verse. His most notable book of poetry, “Heart River Undertow,” an anthology of poems that explore motifs of roots, love, race and prejudice, was nominated for both the 2008 National Book Award and American Book Award. Herb also launched a poetry development and performance spirituality group at All Souls Church, Unitarian, where he became a member in 2007.
Herb is survived by his loving wife and longtime All Souls member, Janet Randolph Lowrey of Atlanta, GA; daughter Lisa Lowrey (Nathan Moser) of Austin, TX; son Alan (Michelle) Lowrey of Easton, MD; stepdaughters Janene Williams and Jenifer Beasley (Chet). He also cherished his seven grandchildren, his sister and three nieces.
