A letter to the congregation from Donna Olsen, Membership Secretary and Chuck Dulaney.
Wearing a name tag is a gift to visitors and church members who may not know or remember your name. It is an invitation and a way to live our Covenant of Right Relations which calls on us to “Greet people warmly; get acquainted with others; treat visitors as fellow worshipers; and welcome newcomers into conversations.”
During November, volunteers have been working to make it easier to use our name tags on Sunday mornings. Our name tag racks have been overcrowded for years and hard to use. At the end of October, all of the name tags were removed from the racks; more than 400 duplicates were recycled, and the remaining name tags were alphabetized by first name and organized in boxes that were placed at the 16th Street Entrance the past four Sunday mornings. Congregants have been finding their name tags in the alphabetized boxes, wearing their name tags during the service and coffee hour, and then placing their name tags back on the cleaned racks under the letter corresponding to the first letter of their first name. The now uncrowded racks will remain near the welcoming table by the 16th Street doors.
In December the tables and boxes will be removed from the entrance and the remaining name tags that have not been placed on the racks will be checked to determine whether or not they belong to current members. The name tag holders of those who are inactive or moved away will be used for new permanent name tags. A permanent name tag signup sheet will continue to be available on the bulletin board in the 16th St. entrance. New name tags will be created if a name tag is lost or damaged or is requested by regular visitors or new members.
