Transcendentalism Then and Now

Beginning this Sunday evening, join Rev. Dr. John Buehrens for a four-part series based on his book, Conflagration: How the Transcendentalists Sparked the American Struggle for Racial, Gender, and Social Justice (Boston: Beacon Press, Jan. 2020). Conflagrations is a fascinating read about Unitarian and Universalist history that reveals the deep friendships of our spiritual ancestors. Rev. Buehrens makes history come alive through storytelling and anecdotes. Although reading the book in advance is helpful, it is not necessary to join the class.

The sessions will cover the following topics:

  • Feb 7: The Transcendentalists: Shared Values, Conversations, and Spiritual Friendships
  • Feb 14: Women’s Rights, Education, and Economic Inequality
  • Feb 21: Abolitionism and the Civil War: The Peak of Transcendentalist Influence
  • Feb 28: Nature, Evolution, and Environmentalism: The Transcendentalist Contribution

Registration is $20 for the series.
