All Souls Welcomes the Crew of the Golden Rule

Sunday, April 16, 2023, 1:30 – 4:30 (Pierce Hall)

“The Golden Rule” arrived in DC on April 4th. The 30-foot vessel is sailing on a peace mission to promote non-violence and to spread an anti-nuclear message to the general public. In 1958, four Quaker peace activists sailed the Golden Rule toward the Marshall Islands with the goal of
interfering with nuclear weapons testing. This was the first direct action against the atomic bombing test sites in the Marshall Islands. The arrival of the Golden Rule in the Chesapeake Bay will allow a broad coalition of communities of faith and justice seeking activists to gather in this environment of heightened interest in nuclear weapons abolition, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and prevention of war.

All Souls Heiwa Peace Project will welcome the crew of The Golden Rule in a special program informed by our holdings of the Hiroshima Children’s Drawings and our nuclear weapons abolition activities. Our gathering at All Souls will include a dialogue with the crew, a panel discussion with historians and theologians on the role of protest, among Black Americans in particular, in the movement for nuclear disarmament. Participants will be given a tour of the Hiroshima Children’s Drawings. We will explore how these important stories and experiences inspire our future work for justice to include racial justice, climate justice and others.
