Novelist and poet Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911) was the most prominent African-American woman writer of her generation. Raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she joined the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia in 1870, after which she maintained a dual commitment to Unitarianism and the AME.
