Associate Director of Music and Arts

20 hrs/week

Salary range: $24,000-$28,000 plus health benefits

Reports to Jen Hayman, Director of Music and Arts

About us

All Souls Church Unitarian seeks a motivated, curious, creative musician to join our team. We are a thriving congregation, with a diverse music program consisting of eight ensembles and over 200 participants. The church has been named a “Best House of Worship” by DC City Paper voters, regularly hosts progressive religious and social justice leaders from around the globe, and holds events that promote our values in and beyond our nation’s capital.

Responsibilities and duties

Brainstorming and collaborating on performance opportunities, repertoire and ideas both within worship and beyond

Organizing and maintaining choral library database, in addition to ordering and distributing/collecting scores

Leading rehearsals, sectionals, lessons with various ensembles (including adult choirs (2), children’s choirs (2), jazz ensemble, West African percussion ensemble, bluegrass band and chamber choir)

Providing support for Children’s Choir and Junior Choir, musical and otherwise (collaborating with music director on lesson planning, classroom management, possible accompanying and small group rehearsals)

Updating and maintaining Google Calendars, listservs and weekly digests for the 5 major performing ensembles

Serving as support staff for concerts and special events

Helping to write arrangements and charts for various ensembles (vocal and instrumental)

Assessing existing program and making recommendations for sustainable ways to grow and shape new programs (with an emphasis on arts disciplines other than music)

Completing other musical and administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications and skills


Bachelor’s degree in music

Piano skills (basic)

Strong interpersonal/communication skills

Experience with Google Groups and Google Calendars

Appreciation for and fluency in a variety of musical traditions and styles

Tuesday evening availability (to accommodate existing rehearsal schedule)

Not Required, But Preferred

Fluency in music notation software (Finale or Sibelius)

Piano accompanying (advanced)

Arts administration and/or marketing

Sound recording and/or production

Experience working in multiracial, multicultural work environments

Experience working with both amateur and professional musicians

Experience in other arts disciplines (drama, visual art, poetry, photography)

Experience working in a church setting
